Write In Your Own “Voice”

October 3, 2007

Blogging VoiceOne of the things that you must do early on to become successful in this community is to find a voice. This is the simplest, yet most important thing you can do to differentiate yourself from all of the other writers in your niche. Finding your voice is all about the way you communicate with your readers. If there isn’t something to set you apart, what keeps them coming back?

Ask yourself these questions -

  1. What do I do differently than others?
  2. Do I have a unique idea or concept that others will find valuable?
  3. Would I read my posts?
  4. Who is my target audience?
  5. Do I do enough to reach my target audience?
  6. Can people pick up on tidbits of my personality through my writing style - or does it sound like I’m writing for a newspaper?
  7. How can I inject my personality into every post?

These questions are entirely meant for self reflection. I recommend getting out a piece of paper and jotting down your answers. Feel free to answer one or all of these questions in the comment section. I’ll be looking them over and perhaps I can provide some insight into helping you find your voice.

The answers to these questions will help you to gain clarity when it comes to your blog and your voice as a writer. Finding a voice that people can relate to is key to building a successful blog. Repeat these questions every few months or so and make sure to note any changes in the answers. These are questions that will shape your blog and mold it into a true powerhouse.

The sooner that you are able to differentiate yourself from all of the other bloggers in your niche, the sooner you start to make real money and gain some real respect. Don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through your blog posts. It’s all about creating a personable experience and growing as a blogger.
